Guest Speaker: Matt Jenkins, Veterans Village/Tunnel to Towers Foundation

Tunnel to Towers Foundation provides supportive services/housing for first responders and veterans.
Veterans Village is located at 2450 Prospect Drive.
Housing is open to men and women and is designed as long-term housing.
Pets are welcome, including service and therapy animals.
Social services include case management, entitlement-program support, and access to national case managers.
Units are fully furnished.
The site includes 90 beds, single-residence options, and efficiency apartments.
Apartments are approximately 1,050 square feet.
Rent: $1,000 for smaller apartments and $1,050 for slightly larger apartments.
Minimum income requirement: $2,200 per month.
Eight veterans had applied as of the meeting date.
Staffing is planned for three shifts, 24/7.
Accessible / high-need units are available.
Background checks are completed as part of the process.

Suzanne shared that the Roundtable Alliance now has a website. However, she did have to adapt the name for domain reasons so it’s now called, Housing Roundtable Alliance

Gateway to Housing Update

Suzanne happily let the group know that she finally has access to funding for GTH and that she will be able to start placing folks in housing in July. She shared that any organizations that were not members of the GTH Network last summer but would like to join now to let her know as soon as possible. As a reminder, clients cannot self-refer to GTH but must be working with a case manager/victim advocate/outreach worker that belongs to the GTH Network. If you have questions or want more information, please contact Suzanne directly.

General Assembly listening sessions are being held throughout the state. The North Charleston session had strong attendance.
Suzanne shared that the Louisiana bill she had mentioned in earlier meetings has unfortunately become law. Sleeping anywhere outside in Louisiana is now illegal and individuals can be jailed and given fines. Additionally, they can be mandated to receive mental health treatment and/or substance abuse treatment and will be charged for this treatment. If they cannot pay the fines, they will be sentenced to unpaid labor to work off what they owe. Suzanne also mentioned that Louisiana has the highest incarceration not only in the country but in the western hemisphere.
Suzanne let everyone know that Captain Josh Davis from Salvation Army asked her to thank everyone who wrote support letters on behalf of the medical respite project. The SA regional leadership is currently reviewing the proposal.
Two staff from Senator Scott’s office attended; they shared that Senator Scott’s office now has a full-time veterans coordinator. She couldn’t attend this Roundtable but will attend future meetings.
The office would like to cultivate congressional contacts with community partners and encouraged anyone with any federal issues to contact them so they can assist.

Zachary Williams informed everyone about the merits of the Clemente program which is a free course.
GED classes are available.
Dr. Hudock shared that they offer robust student services that include table events, collaboration, free bus passes, food resources, and course completion support with laptop access and once course is completed student can keep the laptop.

New nonprofit introduced.
Focus areas noted: helping South Carolina residents pay electric and water bills and helping prevent eviction involvement.

Stand Down event for people experiencing homelessness is scheduled for October 8, 2026 at the convention center.

NAMI Charleston announced they are now going to be on-site at College of Charleston and are also planning to also collaborate with Trident Tech to also operate on their campuses.

Shelby made everyone aware of City of North Charleston’s new program: Benefits on Your Block - Summer 2026.
Contact Shelby regarding calls for service.
Focus areas: resources, humanitarian response, and immediate help in the community when needs arise.

Scheduled for July 25, 2026, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Rollins Edwards Community Center.
Family-friendly festival with 40+ vendors and food trucks.
Purpose: raise awareness about mental health and substance use disorders.

Suzanne let everyone know there were survey flyers on the tables for the COG’s current transportation survey that includes a QR code and encouraged everyone to complete the survey.

Collaboration: It takes a village. Coming together allows partners to share ideas, strengthen connections, and remember that this work is shared.
